The year is 1960 and highly acclaimed American novelist John Steinbeck has decided to make a three month driving tour of the United States. His means of travel is a three-quarter ton pickup truck with a well provisioned and appointed camper mounted in the bed. His sole traveling companion is his poodle Charlie.Steinbeck begins his journey in Sag Harbor, New York shortly after Labor Day with a short loop through New England before plowing through the upper Midwest. Along the way, it is his hope to "rediscover" America after having written about it for so many years. He is touched by the almost innate wanderlust within himself and many of the people he encounters.Much of the book reads as a travelogue, and to be honest these were the most entertaining and enlightening. When Steinbeck begins to philosophize, as he does extensively throughout his travels through Texas and then the Deep South (this is 1960, remember), he loses my interest. The book is interesting and entertaining, though at times pedantic and irritating. Most irritating to me was the obviously fictional encounters that Steinbeck creates in an around New Orleans in which he confronts four obvious stereotypes of the region and time frame: The wise, old white gentleman who acknowledges the sins of his race; the elderly black gentleman who is utterly subservient and beaten down; the fire breathing middle aged white racist and the idealistic young black freedom rider.Overall, not a bad read.

What I didn't know about John Steinbeck is that he is always engaging. For twenty years he was the big man writing the Great American Novel: "Tortilla Flat"; "Of Mice and Men"; "The Grapes of Wrath". Then in 1960 he decided he needed to refill his creative tank. He needed to travel across America again (from Maine to California and back home to New York), not as a tourist, not to see the sights--but to engage with people, Americans--see what they were thinking, hear what they were talking about. Steinbeck was the kind of man who could walk into any bar or hardware store or gas station and engage with and maybe even make a friend for a moment or a lifetime of the person he encountered. To be sure, whisky often seemed a catalyst to his socializing. Certainly he was a charming man. To make it even more charming he traveled with this poodle, Charley. Steinbeck didn't give out his name, didn't want to be treated as the big writer. Thus he gathered a very honest, undistorted view of 1960 America. I also didn't know Steinbeck didn't live very long. He died in 1968 at the age of 66.

Being well aware of the recent challenges of the historical authenticity of the writings of the book, I plunged into this travelogue with the same fascination of reading Mr. Steinbeck’s other books. It presents itself as an intriguing look of America in the early 1960’s. Mr. Steinbeck reflects upon how we as Americans were beginning to change in this country, for example our speech patterns melding after “20 years of television and 40 years of radio,” only after 20 and 40 years of these inventions? He searched out the common people among the roadside diners and campsites and gave us a glimpse of the common American of this time period. You’ll be surprise how much has and has not changed over the past 65 years. A good read. I would love to make the same journey he did.

For a travel story written 60 years ago, it is remarkably like road trips in the US today. The story is compelling with a great partner: Charley, the delightful French poodle. Descriptions are inspiring, characters along the way are appealing. It is such a real journey, so fascinating to travel along. The last chapter is so disheartening, it clearly shows this country has made no progress in the dream of democracy.

Mr. Steinbeck's intention of his travel with Charley, his old poodle, in Rocinante, a noble camping truck named after Don Quixote's horse, was two folds: first, his innate wanderlust had grown bigger as his ages advanced. He defied the senility of mind and body as a man who could still be a manly husband to his wife and function as an able-bodied man in society; second, Mr. Steinbeck wanted to see America as he had known on a personal level and to ascertain what could define true American identity and character. What he experienced in his own eyes across the land was part rhapsody of begone days he used to remember and part treatise on American national characteristics. Mr. Steinbeck was indeed a Don Quixote in his pursuit of finding America as portrayed in his novels and as remembered in his memory. But most of all, Mr. Steinbeck was a quintessential American writer in his tough-guy demeanor smeared in the narrative who had a deep affection for his country despite its foibles and imperfections.

The Real Estate Game: The Intelligent Guide To Decisionmaking And Investment, by William J. Poorvu Jeffrey L. Cruikshank

Amazon.com Review

Real estate is as much about people as it is about property, and, after location, success in real estate depends upon understanding the motives of those who play the game, because many critical decisions revolve around what real estate people think, how they act and why. The Real Estate Game, by William J. Poorvu and Jeffrey L. Cruikshank, is a clear, comprehensive overview illustrated with real-life experiences about individual investors, small developers, and moguls. Poorvu has developed and managed real estate and taught real estate investing at the Harvard Business School for over 35 years. This book is drawn from his course, and is designed to help investors make the right decisions derived from the right assumptions and to provide an insider's perspective on how to spot risks and develop strategies that provide protection and adequate investment returns. The book uses the analogy of a game to illustrate some of the intricate and unpredictable interactions in real estate deals, and it lays out the rules of the game, including identification of the key players and periods of play: concept, commitment, development, operation, reward, and reinvestment. Readers are taught to be "value investors," ready to buy at the right price at the right time, because the best opportunities come from buying at a discount-to-replacement cost. The value investor must be prepared to sell at the right juncture, and must not be compelled to be in the game when conditions make the game not worth playing. The case studies that run through the book show how to evaluate, develop, and operate all kinds of real estate investments from the points of view of all involved in the process. There's an extensive appendix covering the different property types, and the authors' "back-of-the-envelope" method for analyzing the financial implications of a potential deal is probably worth the book's weight in gold. --Scott Harrison

From Booklist

Poorvu is a Boston real-estate developer who teaches an elective course in real estate at the Harvard Business School. Like his earlier collection of case studies, The Real Estate Challenge (1996), this new book comprises course material. To emphasize the competitive aspects of real estate, Poorvu compares the business to a game. With an informal style, he outlines the components that determine the rules of this game: capital markets, the players, properties, and the external environment. After explaining the basic financial analyses necessary to make decisions, Poorvu contrasts four ways to invest in real estate: buying property directly, investing in private syndications, multiproperty funds, and public real-estate securities. He also compares the more challenging development phase of real estate with the nuts-and-bolts aspects of the operations phase. Finally, he recommends how and when to "harvest" or recoup value that has been added to a deal. Grounded in theory and practice, Poorvu's advice stands out in a category filled with superficial, get-rich-quick guides. David Rouse

Review

“The best English-language account . . . [Tombstone] combines thorough statistical analysis with detailed archival research and heart-rending oral histories.” ―Matthew C. Klein, Bloomberg“Without a doubt the definitive account--for now and probably for a long time . . . One of the most important books--not just China books--of our time.” ―Arthur Waldron, The New Criterion“A vital testimony of a largely buried era.” ―Clarissa Sebag-Montefiore, The Independent“Yang's discreet and well-judged pursuit of his project over more than a decade is a quietly heroic achievement.” ―Roger Garside, China Rights Forum“Tombstone easily supersedes all previous chronicles of the famine, and is one of the best insider accounts of the Party's inner workings during this period, offering an unrivalled picture of socioeconomic engineering within a rigid ideological framework . . . meticulously researched.” ―Pankaj Mishra, The New Yorker“Eye-opening . . . boldly unsparing.” ―Jonathan Mirsky, The New York Times Book Review“Beautifully written and fluidly translated, Tombstone deserves to reach as many readers as possible.” ―Samuel Moyn, The Nation“[An] epic account . . . Tombstone is a landmark in the Chinese people's own efforts to confront their history.” ―Ian Johnson, The New York Review of Books“The toll is astounding, and this book is important for many reasons--difficult to stomach, but important all the same.” ―Kirkus Review“Mao's Great Famine of the late 1950s continues to boggle the mind. No one book or even set of books could encompass the tens of millions of lives needlessly and intentionally destroyed or explain the paranoid megalomania of China's leaders at the time. As with the Holocaust, every serious new account both renews our witness of the murdered dead and extends our understanding. Zhou Xun here selects, translates, and annotates 121 internal reports from local officials to their bosses. They form a frank, grisly, and specific portrait of hysteria defeating common sense. Zhou's University of Hong Kong colleague, Frank Dikötter, extricated some of these documents from newly opened (and now again closed) archives in local headquarters across China for his Mao's Great Famine: The History of China's Most Devastating Catastrophe 1958–1962, but Zhou's book stands on its own. A useful introduction, headnotes to each chapter, a chronology, and explanatory notes frame the documents. VERDICT Accessible and appealing to assiduous readers with knowledge of Mao's China; especially useful to specialists.” ―Charles W. Hayford, Evanston, IL“A book of great importance.” ―Jung Chang, author of Wild Swans and co-author of Mao: The Unknown Story“A truly necessary book.” ―Anne Applebaum, author of Gulag: A History“In 1989 hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Chinese died in the June Fourth massacre in Beijing, and within hours hundreds of millions of people around the world had seen images of it on their television screens. In the late 1950s, also in Communist China, roughly the inverse happened: thirty million or more died while the world, then and now, has hardly noticed. If the cause of the Great Famine had been a natural disaster, this double standard might be more understandable. But the causes, as Yang Jisheng shows in meticulous detail, were political. How can the world not look now?” ―Perry Link, Chancellorial Chair for Innovative Teaching, Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages, University of California, Riverside“Hard-hitting. . . It's a harrowing read, illuminating a historic watershed that's still too little known in the West.” ―Publishers' Weekly“Groundbreaking…The most authoritative account of the Great Famine…One of the most important books to come out of China in recent years.” ―Ian Johnson, The New York Review of Books“The most stellar example of retrospective writing on the Mao period from any Chinese pen or computer.” ―Perry Link, Chancellorial Chair for Innovative Teaching, Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages, University of California, Riverside“The first proper history of China's Great Famine.” ―Anne Applebaum, The Washington Post“A monumental work comparable to Solzhenitsyn's Nobel Prize-winning work The Gulag Archipelago.” ―Xu Youyu, Chinese Academy of Social Science

I was born in Beijing in 1985, and lived there through 7th grade. Growing up in the 90's I often heard my elders refer to the "Three Years of Natural Disaster" as a period of hardship - all my family resided in Beijing and Shanghai, and they were deprived of food -but they were not starved (My grandma used to talk about buying crumbs of bread and saving the one egg she was able to find for my mother). My grandparents went through the labor reform camps and my parents were left at home to be looked after by good hearted neighbors and relatives. Not a easy life by any means, but no one in my family died from this "Three Years of Natural Disaster."NEVER have I heard about cannibalism, mass starvation and the wiping out of entire families. Why? Because, I now realize, that all the people who died were people who lived in the poorest areas of the country, with no power to ask for anything. 45 million people died brutal, torturous deaths. There were villages where so many people died, that they had to quarantine the entire area so that news didn't get out. There was NO WAY for people who lived in the major cities to know the extent of suffering the rest of China went through. But what shocked me even more is that this was never a NATURAL disaster...there was nothing natural about any of it. In fact, the entire tragedy was brought on by a chain reaction composed of greed, oppression and cowardice. Politics, bureaucracy, and a power hungry totalitarian ruler were what caused this famine.Okay, I don't want to go into much detail here because I am getting carried away...This book is life changing for me, as a child of the new-generation China. I grew up in a westernized and prosperous Beijing, and even China from the 1970's was far removed from me. There is an assumption that my generation doesn't really care about what happened before, because we got in made - we're the first generation to fully experience the benefits and wealth brought on by Deng Xiaoping's policy to open up to the west. I had Coca-cola, I had Mcdonald's. I was an only child, and so were all my classmates, and we were all spoiled to bits. Perhaps it is because of our removal from that history of suffering that they think it is a good opportunity to bury the past, starting from us.This book pulled back the curtains and revealed to me this gaping hole in my history book. It is like finding out my mother is a serial killer. I could not sleep for days, and cried through every page. But I know that as a Chinese person, I have a responsibility to read this book. To not read it would be like allowing this enormous lie to keep festering in me. I wish that every Chinese person could read this and know the truth. Too bad it is banned in China, and I doubt it would ever see the light of day.I am not a political person, but I can't stand the thought of millions dying for no reason. They did die for no reason, though - a genocide on this scale is beyond all reason/justification - but the least we could do now is to KNOW about it. These were people who spoke my language, and celebrated the same holidays, and knew the same folklores. It just hits me so hard - I never thought there could be this deliberate, government induced mass extinction in the recent history of China, covered up so well. I thought I was fortunate to be born in a country that has never invaded anyone or started any wars. Turned out it was too busy killing off its own people.Anyway, if you are like me - if you grew up in China and went to school there...I think you owe it to yourself to read this book. We've been lied to, we've been treated as unthinking, unfeeling fools with no conscience.... Don't let them do that to you anymore. If you have an opportunity to get this book, get it and read it. We have a right to know, and to lament for our own.

Facts and figures, facts and figures, facts and figures. No real personal human interest stories, which seems strange since it chronicles the needless and early deaths of more than 35 million Chinese people due to Mao's evil policies. It shows what can happen when average people blindly follow an evil man, and how even good ideas can be corrupted by simple people put in charge of their peers with no training and no accountability. My wife is a survivor of that time, being born in China in 1958. This book does help me understand why she is always hungry, grows a huge garden, is always preparing food, and gets frantic if a meal is an hour late; food is the most important thing in her life. None of us, not even the poorest of the poor, in the U.S. can comprehend what tens of millions of Chinese suffered in the late 1950's and 1960's. I wish the author would have used the help of a professional writer to make an easier read, but it is none the less an important historical book.

Yang's book is a very thorough exhaustive and exhausting history of the Great Chinese Famine that was the direct result of the Great Leap Forward. In wondering how 36 million people died of starvation (with an estimated 76 million total decline in potential population due to a dramatically curtailed birth rate along with the unnatural death rate), this book details policies, politicians' and civilians' actions that all contributed to this disaster. This book is thoroughly researched and documented, One of the most important aspects of this book that made me want to read it and continue reading it is that it is based upon Chinese archival material and through eyewitness accounts. Yang's book is nothing short of overwhelming though. His account details the inhumanity starvation caused as society broke down during these years. The barbaric behavior of so many is presented again and again through actions such as widespread cannibalism, corruption, ambivalence, deception, and ignorance. Therein lies the problem though. Yang has so much material in this book that the accounts he presents seem to reoccur endlessly in the book. The fact that this single volume was condensed from the ordinal publication in two volumes is stunning since I cannot imagine reading two volumes of this. This one volume was more than enough for me. Yang presents an enormous amount of data, but his descriptions of that data is mind-numbingly dull at times. This book is probably best appreciated by experienced historians and scholars of modern China. This book will help any serious student of contemporary China to understand the emergence of the modern state of the People's Republic of China as it left behind a horrific tragedy.

Essays on MindBy Donald O. Hebb

Donald Olding Hebb, referred to by American Psychologist as one of "the 20th century's most eminent and influential theorists in the realm of brain function and behavior," contributes greatly to the understanding of mind and thought in Essays on Mind.

His objective was to learn about thought which he considered "the central problem of psychology -- but also, not less important, to learn how to think clearly about thought, which is philosophy." The volume is written for advanced undergraduates, graduates, professionals, and lay people interested in or studying the mind.

Hebb offers an increased understanding of the mind from a biological perspective that affects long-standing philosophical and psychological problems. "Psychology and Philosophy were divorced some time ago but, like other divorced couples, they still have problems in common," writes Hebb.

The first three chapters establish the methodological and philosophical basis for his biologically centered theory of behavior, including the evolution of the mind, nature versus nurture, the origination and status of cell-assembly theory, and infant thought and language development. He concludes with a discussion of the workings of scientific thought from a practical rather than theoretical perspective.

Review

D.O. Hebb's cell assembly theory created the perspective on mind and brain which underlies all current research on neural networks. Essays on Mind Presents an easily readable account of Hebb's intellectual biography and philosophical views. This kaleidoscopic book provides a historically situated synopsis of cell-assembly theory, in the context of discussions on topics which range from free will, consciousness, and introspection to the evidence for extrasensory perception and the usefulness of I.Q. tests.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up—An unusual perspective on the Great War. French author/illustrator Barroux Found A Soldier's Diary Among Some Belongings Being Discarded On The Street And Decided To Depict This Young Man's Words In The Graphic Novel Format. The Diary Covers The First Two Months Of World WarI, as seen from the perspective of a French infantryman. The story is both fascinating and frustrating, as we read about the boredom and confusion experienced by soldiers who spend most of their time walking, digging trenches, waiting for letters, looking for shelter, and wondering where the war is, exactly. Once in a while they will see a plane overhead, or hear artillery fire off in the distance, or have to hide from the enemy. Instead of the usual "big picture" focus garnered from textbooks, readers see the war as a microcosm, as told by one of its thousand moving parts. Barroux's illustrations were created with thick butcher's pencil on watercolor paper, which were then covered with a tinted varnish. The overall effect is of black-and-white drawings seen through a sepia-toned filter, which make the pictures look as old as the story itself. This volume would be most appreciated by readers looking for primary sources about World War I, as well as anyone who wants to know what it was like to be a soldier a century ago.—Andrea Lipinski, New York Public Library

Review
"...a remarkable artifact, given haunting new life." —Publishers Weekly "fascinating." —School Library Journal "...this creative repurposing of almost-lost primary source material is an excellent all-ages memorial, especially fitting for the war's centennial." —Booklist Online

"The artwork's timbre fits well with the text. The paneled illustrations effectively slow the pace of the account, allowing thoughts and images to resonate deeply with readers." —School Library Journal's Curriculum Connections

"...an unforgettable reading experience for readers of all ages."

From the Back Cover
