This has been on my wishlist for quite sometime. A little disappointed it's not actually a guide to all 14 languages. It's mostly elvish. The other languages are hardly mention let alone explained or broken down.
It is TINY. The "Elvish-English Dictionary" isn't just Elvish. ..it has a bunch of other words besides Elvish so it is hard to pick out just Elvish and it is very limited. The worst part is that the biggest section lists the Elvish words and then English translation...which is only good if you are just trying to look up an Elvish word you already know. I'm gonna need to find another book to actually get what I was really looking for: an Elvish-English / English-Elvish Dictionary :/
This clearly written and easy to understand treatise of the fourteen languages will greatly expand your horizons of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The author deftly explains how each language system works. One can notice similarities to Old and Middle English, as in the original "Lord Beowulf" and "Canterbury Tales".There are also common elements of the Norwegian "Eddas", or "Tales of Old". This comes as no surprise since the Visigoths and Angles, Saxons, and Jutes inhabited Britain for centuries. As a result, their Germanic linguistic roots were integrated into what, in part, would eventually become Modern English. A dictionary is also provided. This book is educational, but it is also intriguing and fun !
I liked this book. As a newcomer to Elvish and the Middle Earth languages, I found this boook to be very helpful and informative. It has extensive dictionaries and studies of the languages of the Hobbits, Rohirrim, and Rhovannion. I especially liked the chapter "Using Elvish." The author admits that these rules are ascertained from the various texts and are not necessarily exact. What I wanted was not just a listing of Elvish words, but to know how to write in Elvish myself. This chapter sets you in that direction. As a novice to Tolkein and Elvish, I can't vouch for the timeliness of the work, but it addressed what I was looking for. I'd recommend it.
This book is great for understanding the grammar of Tolkien's languages: sentence structure, verb tense formation, etc.It also has a very nice glossary and dictionary. It also presents the various alphabets (rune equivalents for dwarvish and Tengwar alphabet for elvin languages), but for me it was difficult to follow exactly how to use the alphabets to write my own sentences (hence, 4 rather than 5 stars).
This book is perfect for Tolkein fans of all ages!I have enjoyed reading it and have been recomending it to all of my fellow middle earth lovers.
My son was interested in learning more about the languages that Tolkien invented, and this book serves the purpose without going into the excruciating detail of an academic tome. It's short and has a lot of information that avid readers of Tolkien will appreciate.
the book came in great condition and i love it and it helps me with writing in elvish and reading it also love the dictionary in it
