Love the book. I've brewed the Saison Dupont and Orval recipes many times: once each as extract only, and subsequently as partial mashes. These are great beers.Some criticisms relate to the yeast recommendations and the priming recommendations.For the Saison Dupont recipe, the book oddly lists Wyeast 3711 French Saison as the first choice for yeast. Readers should know that the second choice, Wyeast 3724, should be the first choice. That yeast is actually derived from Saison Dupont, and it's what gives the beer it's distinctive character. It's a trickier yeast, since it must be fermented very warm (I use a Fermwrap) to bring out the flavors and prevent stalling. WLP565 is the White Labs version of this yeast. If it does stall, give it plenty more time. It's best to leave it in primary for 2 to 3 weeks (maybe longer) before racking to secondary. Alternatively, 3711 can be pitched when fermentation slows if you're impatient (as noted on Wyeast's website). Much of Phil Markowski's book "Farmhouse Ales" is dedicated to the Dupont yeast.As for the Orval recipe. It's fantastic. It even tastes a bit like Orval; even though the yeast strains recommended are the Rochefort strain (1762) and the Chimay strain (1214). The book neglects to mention that the Orval strain is only available from time to time from White Labs as WLP510. Further, Orval adds a wild strain called Brettanomyces Bruxellensis at the time of bottling. Better to add the Brett (White Labs WLP650) in secondary, though, and give it lots of time. Brett works slowly on some sugars that the primary strain misses. See Stan Hieronymus's "Brew Like A Monk" for the details referenced here with regard to Orval, as well as the information about the Chimay and Rochefort yeast.That said, I used the Chimay (1214) strain, and it's great. Recently finished one with the Rochefort (1762) strain. Having finished at 1.006, I went ahead and added the Brett (WLP650) with 2/3 the priming sugar and strong bottles (to account for the additional carbonation from the Brett).The author often mentions to add dry malt extract (DME) in lieu of priming (corn) sugar to carbonate beers. While some may have success with this, I tried it once with an experimental 1 gallon batch, and I found that it left a nasty residual taste.All this sounds pretty critical, but I'll stress again that the recipes are great. You just might want to double check the yeast suggestions and stick to regular priming sugars. I love these recipes so much that I tinker around with them in Beersmith a bit each time to tweak them here and there, but also to ensure that the core recipes that I love are still respected.I'm looking forward to trying out some others. Would have liked to have seen a number of other beers in the book. Given all the great newer American craft brews, this book - published in 2010 - could use an update.

Very cool, lots of great recipes including my all time favorite Saison Dupont. But because of the way the book was bound, it's some what difficult to hold open, read, and brew all once. Kinkos has a very useful service where they'll cut off the spine, and install a spiral binding for about $7. There's also a pretty useful crash course in the beginning of the book where they teach you how to reverse engineer pretty much any beer. Great book, highly recommend.

This is a great collection of recipes that cover a wide variety of beers. The recipes are well laid-out and easy to follow. I've so far only made one beer from this book, but it came out very well. Some experience is needed, or you might want to consult another book that covers the brewing process in more detail, such as "How to brew" by John Palmer. One peculiarity is that the recipes don't state how long you should leave in primary and secondary fermentation. The selection of beers is quite good, though it is somewhat heavily weighted towards lagers, which is a bit odd, since they are not as commonly brewed by home brewers due to the need for chilled lagering. I would have liked to see more IPAs (there are only 10), but that is just my preference. I'm looking forward to trying more recipes from this book!

This book has some excellent recipes. I followed the all-grain recipe for Rare Vos and ended up with probably the best beer I've ever tasted! I've made quite a few beers from here, and all of them have turned out pretty spot-on when doing a side-by-side tasting with the actual beers.

I purchased the kindle version of this book because I was attending a brewing class in a few hours and needed a copy in my hands asap. I also have a paper copy of this book because it has some amazing recipes for making your own beer. It was recommended by my brew master and has opened a whole new world of brewing to me.It takes you through step by step the recipes and direction for brewing your own beer. If you are buying for a self brewer or simply curious about what goes into some of your favorite beers I highly recommend this book. It is the bible of brewing, according to my brewmaster. I have enjoyed it and plan on keeping it around. Instead of purchasing those high priced kits that always seem to be lacking something I can copy a recipe and take it with me when I go shopping to check off everything I will need to make a beer that I truly want to drink.I am not a huge beer drinker but my husband is. But have found several recipes in this book I actually enjoy drinking. And worst case scenario it always makes amazing beer bread. I give this book two thumbs up because it is not only informative it is also a cookbook of various flavors of beer and how brewers get that taste through the selection of particular hops and yeast and processes. You will never look at beer the same way again after reading this book.

This book is a very good start for homebrew recipes. However, I don't find myself reaching for this book very often. Yes, it has a lot of information as a good start for cloning, but I think most internet websites have this information with greater clarity from folks testing it. I have to give the book some credit, and therefore 4 stars, because this book may have been the starting point for many of those internet recipes. I have the book, but I have not brewed anything from it exactly as written. I also brew all grain, and the book is geared for the extract brewer.I find myself reading the book just to have something to read on the couch for my next idea for a brew. The book is also well organized by style. I use it to scan through the base grains and hops in recipes, and makes hybrids of various commercial beers. Again, it's a good book for someone looking for a starting points for recipes, but it also is a good book to pick up for folks that want to have something to fuel their brewing obsession.

The title should say it all. Greene's text was full of rambling and formulas with absolutely no explanation of what any of it meant. Greene was assigned text in my grad econometrics class and it was absolutely useless. So on a friend's suggestion, I bought Kennedy's text and aced my class without a problem.Kennedy takes his time explaining the absolutely crucial parts. He goes through several mistakes and pitfalls one can make in the field in careful detail (Violating assumptions chapters). His book also has a great introduction to bootstrapping which is widely used in later applied courses and seminars.One subject I wish he gave more detail on would be robust estimation. I felt the chapter was very short and he could have gone into the subject in more detail.All in all, an excellent introduction to the field of econometrics. If you were assigned Cassella/Berger or Greene, do yourself a favor and get Kennedy's book because the others will not make any sense whatsoever. It also makes a fantastic reference book for when you are working in the private sector.I have used this book as a reference in the following classes:- Statistical Inference- Econometrics- Applied Microeconometrics (markov chain monte carlo methods)Background:I have a MS in Math and a MA in Economics and work as a quant at an investment bank

Great book. Actually, I can't stress enough how great this book is. This is like a personal tutor who can explain concepts and more importantly, limitations of econometrics in practice, with words. If you can sense that your econometrics class is simple in principle but is being hidden underneath a bunch of math, don't hesitate one more second in buying this book. I read it on the train a lot and found that it helped immensely. Many econometrics classes provide general models or theories and expect you to figure out which models are just specific cases of the general model. Kennedy skips this step and just tells you in English which is refreshing and builds confidence. Even for a beginner 'metrics class, I would recommend this text because the most important thing to learn about OLS is its limitations. Where most texts assume away inconveniences, Kennedy shoots straight.

Throughout the 1970's, big-name sociologists with impeccable methodological and statistical credentials sought to persuade the discipline's journeymen that they should learn econometrics. The two most influential proponents of this view were the social statistics luminaries Hubert Blalock and Otis Dudley Duncan. Blalock was more optimistic than Duncan with regard to the ultimate payoff, but Duncan was more arrogantly dismissive of those who failed to heed his admonition.In response, sociology and related social science journals became much more densely quantitative. Many social scientists, as a result, felt as if they had been reduced to obslescence. After all, econometrics and the other new quantitative tools, especially path analysis, which had come to dominate the discipline were difficult topics under the best of circumstances, and most social scientists lacked the mathematical training to tackle the best known econometrics texts, such as those by Jack Johnston, Jan Kmenta, and Arthur Goldberger. Many social scientists had been introduced to the econometrics mainstay, regression analysis, but not in this highly technical form.Fortunately, the decade of the '70's also saw publication of Damodar Gujarati's introductory econometrics text, as well as the first edition of Peter Kennedy's Guide to Econometrics. Gujarati's book presented much the same material as his more insistently mathematical colleagues, but in a much more accessible form. Kennedy explicitly acknowledges that his objective is to compile an accessible repository of the rapidly growing list of tests and procedures available to make regression analysis more generally applicable and informative. Anyone interested in the history of econometrics over the past forty years would do well to begin with Kenndy's book.Even for those of us for whom this stuff does not come easily, Kennedy's text is an invaluable reference. For the newcomer, it remains a fine overview of econometrics and a useful adjunct to any basic text. When the seventh edition comes out, it will be interesting to see what Kennedy makes of the near-obsessive concern with instrumental variable methods of causal analysis as presented, for example, in Angrist and Pischke's Mostly Harmless Econometrics.As an addendum, Peter Kennedy is no longer with us, so unless his publisher recruits a co-author, I assume there will be no seventh edition. Finding a co-author as dedicated, knowledgeable, and who writes as well as Kennedy would be a tough job.

This book was used as a text for one of my courses, and Kennedy does a strong job of explaining basic econometrics in really clear language. It's definitely an old standby, and it's useful for trying to figure out lots of statistics in a very good theoretical manner.As somebody who is pretty weak in statistics, this book definitely gave some very clear explanations of a whole slew of statistical methods for analyzing data sets, so I'd say it's useful even to non-econometricians as well as its intended audience of econometricians.

Journalist Koppel found the inspiration for this book, based on her 2006 New York Times article, after discovering Florence Wolfson’s diary in a Manhattan dumpster. Koppel eventually locates Florence in Florida and surprises the 90-year-old with this artifact from her past, which reveals her views on growing up as an intelligent, ambitious and creative teenager on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in the 1930s. Florence received the diary as a present on her 14th birthday. She recorded everything from her first kiss (with a boy) to her crush on actress Eva Le Galliene (which led her to question her sexuality) to her passion for writing and art. The diary acts as a window into a fascinating and privileged world, one that Koppel tries to recreate by writing in a novelistic way, using no more than snippets of text from Florence’s diary and, we can presume, multiple interviews as support. The result, which some readers may find frustrating and others rewarding, is that the original inspiration—the diary itself—becomes no more than a starting point for a much larger story: that of Florence’s life.

In the first chapters of this study I give general information about control systems, digital signal processors, digital signal processing and the DSP used in this work. The following chapters tell about PWM, how to configure the PWM outputs and some examples related with PWM signals are given. After a short review of series resonant converters, I presented the last example implemented in this project. I conclude with a summary and provide some hints of future work.

Baris Bagci earned his BSc degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2001 and his MSc degree in Electrical Engineering in 2003. Since then he worked in different areas from automotive to product testing, renewable energy technologies and high voltage measurement technologies.
